Billy Joel isn't just into Harley Davidsons. He actually has over 30 bikes with loads of cafe racers and bobbers. 20 of his bikes are on display in New York at Christy’s Art Center. It's called 'The Motorcycle as Art and Icon' and we wish we were in NY to check it out. His beautiful Royal Enfield cafe racer built by Mike DePalo of UK Motorsports is among them. We are big fans of the Wrench Monkees from Denmark, Copenhagen. They have so many great bikes on their website but this Honda CB750 is one of our favourites. They mix up their project bikes from the classic SR500 and XS650 through to some less obvious rides like the z750B and Z1000A. Whatever the model they are turning them all into unique custom bikes that we really dig.
You have probably seen, worn or heard of these jeans. They are called Draggin Jeans and they take the humble denim jean and place a kevlar liner inside to save your skin (and any other precious ligaments). Over the years they have made some big claims about these jeans but have backed it up by dragging people on their backside to show how durable they are (that will do it). I have found new respect for Cyprus. Not only do they have the Cypress Classic Motorcycle Museum but they produced these beautiful vintage motorcycle stamps. Snail mail has never looked so fast.
It's been way too long since I've mentioned a Japanese Custom shop. Heres one called Custom Jump from Kyushu. They specialize in TW200, TW225's and of course the favourite SR400. They have created some crazy TW's and this is just a taste. Check their gallery to see more, including an American Chopper styled TW225.
This has to be one of the most beautiful British racers ever made. It was Matchless’ first attempt at a 500cc production racer. Not very reliable and even had a tendency to blow up. A cross between a special version of their roadgoing 500cc two-cylinder engine and the AJS 7R (everything but the engine). AJS and Matchless were both owned by AMC (Associated Motorcycle Company). The British sure knew how to make exceptional motorcycles. Shame about their reliability, although Triumph has pretty much sorted that out these days.
Something a little bit different. The motorcycle insurance company Allstate has designed this awesome website that lets you create your own custom bobber or chopper (sadly no cafe racer option). Choose a frame, wheels, front end, engine, paint and more. All a bit of fun for those that want to create a custom without actually getting dirty. Or print it out and make it for real.
This classic 500cc racer was unveiled in the spring of 1948, compared to past Gilera bikes it was a new slick design. The Gilera was raced at the Dutch TT in June where prominent Japanese manufacturing reps took numerous rolls of film of the new racer (and no doubt ripped off). The 1949 season was a shake down for the new bike and went on to demonstrate its potential by winning several races but failed to win the manufacturer title that was clinched by one point by Les Graham on AJS. The head engineer actually left shortly after building this bike and went to work for MV Agusta. Funnily enough the 1950 MV Agusta looked very similar to this classic motorcycle.
