BMW R75/5 Cafe Racer

Chris Hodgson, owner of San Jose BMW (SJBMW) has been building and racing BMW’s for over 35 years. This stunning R75/5 Cafe Racer was built a couple of years ago when Chris discovered he “had enough spare parts to build a new airhead”- we wish we had enough spare parts lying around to build a bike of this calibre. That’s not to say that this bike was built overnight. It was a year in the making with Chris ensuring the bike was built to be period correct, either using vintage parts or having them custom made.

1962 Norton Manx 500

This stunning illustration is by Australian artist Gaston Vanzet. Gaston is completely obsessed with drawing and painting classic motorcycles. Each picture usually takes him around 3 weeks to finish and this is how Gaston describes the experience: “I love painting these motorcycles, I become one with the machine as I end up knowing every detail, every curve and fin, they become mine”. These days he does the painting on his computer using a Wacom tablet – “the technique is nearly the same as the old days of paint and turpentines except there is no mess”. Each stroke is still done by hand except for the backgrounds which are combinations of photographs mostly from his local area. Motorcycles of the 20th Century

It’s truly amazing what you can find on the internet. This exquisite picture is a 1963 Kreidler Renn Florett and is just one of 700 high quality rendered images on Bert Knoester’s extensive archive of historically interesting motorcycles, scooters and mopeds of the twentieth century. The site is called Motorcycles of the 20th Century and features most of the best motorcycles ever manufactured, ranging from a 1907 Harley Davidson through to the world famous 1987 Buell RR1000 Battletwin. Whether you need some inspiration for a project or just want to see the vast number of unique motorcycles the world has produced over the past 100 years this site won’t disappoint. MZ RE 125 Racer

This magnificent motorcycle is the MZ RE 125. MZ stands for Motorradwerk Zschopau (German for motorcycle factory at Zschopau). MZ have a long history of making motorcycle dating back to the early 1900’s by parent company DKW. In 1929 over 60000 motorcycles were manufactured at the Zschopau factory making DKW the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. Unfortunately after 90 years of making motorcycles the Zschopau factory closed down in 2008 and was turned into a funky German nightclub called MZWerk (scheisse!). Then last year Former GP stars Ralf Waldmann and Martin Wimmer bought the MZ motorcycle brand for $5 million euros and are rumoured to be in the process of manufacturing a 600cc road bike based on the Moto2 GP project bike. 1968 Greeves Oulton

It’s hard to believe only 21 of these beautiful Greeves Oulton racers were ever sold. As the story goes the previous race bike they produced was the legendary 1965 250cc Greeves Silverstone which won the Lightweight Manx Grand Prix twice. Then at Silverstone it won third place which cemented the production of the Silverstone through until the end of 1967, until they were being beaten by rice rockets like the Yamaha TD1C. Greeves decided to produce a larger capacity machine for the 1968 season, and thus was born the 344cc 35RFS Oulton. This bike was a lightweight stunner but sadly failed to match the success of the Silverstone, and as mentioned earlier only 21 were sold. Unfortunately Bert Greeves decided it was time to retire from the company in 1968 and after that so did Greeves production of road racers.

Honda CS90 Racer

Maejima “Ted” Takeshi the owner of Japanese Shop Ted’s Special has a passion for vintage Honda’s. Ted has been racing and restoring these little beauties for over a decade. Back in the 60’s the Honda CS90 was a bit of a legend. Powered by the Super Cub 90 engine and featuring a lightweight pressed steel frame, this machine earned a reputation for excellent performance in Japan. Although they only produced 8bhp, the ultra-lightweight (191lbs) CS90 was a pocket rocket. After Ted has modified them for the race track these classics become hypersonic Honda’s. 1965 Harley-Davidson CRTT

Christmas has come early this year, thanks to a reviewer’s copy of the Harley-Davidson Motor Co. Archive Collection landing on my desk. This coffee table book is the most comprehensive record of Harley-Davidson Motorcycles ever assembled (it also weighs about the same as a Fat Boy). With over 600 exquisite studio photographs by Randy Leffingwell and an interesting story of every Harley-Davidson made over the past 100 years, including the rare bicycles and snow mobiles they briefly manufactured. Fortunately the founders of Harley-Davidson had the foresight to keep examples of all their motorcycles. Although some of the collection were only acquired recently, like this immaculate 1965 CRTT Road Racer (pictured). The HD archives apparently purchased this rare motorcycle in 1998. Honda CB350

This beautiful orange CB350 cafe racer is the handy work of Australian, Ben Shaw. Ben runs a custom bike shop called Extreme Creations on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. He started the business from his garage over 10 years ago, but after 2 years of receiving projects from word of mouth he needed to find a bigger premise to work from. We can see why his business keeps on growing. This 50’s styled CB350 cafe racer is simply breathtaking, so different from the streetfighters Ben has become renound for. Custom House Stinky SR

The name might sound a bit funny but Customs House Stinky (CHS) have been building some serious looking motorcycles in Japan since 1983. Their website is littered with beautiful bikes including many Cafe Racers, mainly using the much loved Yamaha SR400. The only thing that stinks about these bikes is the smell of burning rubber as they disappear into the distance. CHS also have an impressive range of handmade tanks and seats that are quite pricey but you are definitely paying for quality. Moto Guzzi Gambalunga

Gambalunga in Italian means “long leg”, and this was the name given to this absolutely stunning Moto Guzzi single-cylinder racing motorcycle built from 1946 to 1951. The name derives fom the engine’s long stroke. The Gambalunga 500cc was one of the special racing models such as the Dondolino, the Condor and Albatros that were being developed for private riders. As the technological evolution continued these bikes were getting faster and faster. In it’s day the Gambalunga was synonymous with on-track domination, power and speed. More recently Luciano Marabese, the Moto Guzzi V11’s designer said he based the bike’s streamlined tailpiece on the Gambalunga single of the Fifties. Whatever the case, this bike is one Italian masterpiece that is worth a small fortune. Unfortunately you want find many on ebay, although one did just sell for over $100,000 at the Bonhams Sunset Boulevard auction in LA.
