It’s a truism of sorts, but in many ways customising bikes is as much about what you remove and where you cut the bike as it is about what you add. Many builds that are hailed as ‘miraculous transformations’ turn out to be mostly about the builder’s skill in seeing past all the external frippery and into the core beauty of the bike’s design. As Michelangelo famously put it, ‘I simply saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.’ And if ever there was a bike the personified that approach it would have to be this, the latest build from Spain’s La Raiz (or The Root) Motorcycles.

The dealership. It usually projects the faceless corporate image of the automotive world, where orders usually come from the head office and conformity is expected. They are hardly a place where creativity can grow freely in – something the boys from British American Motors realised four years ago. They decided to do things a little different and once free of the shackles of orders from above, have been able to build bikes like today’s feature bike, their take on the 2012 Triumph Scrambler. Take that conformity.

Triumph Scrambler ‘A.R.D’ – Anvil Motociclette

There’s nothing quite like a motorbike that has been painted matte black. Sure, these days you see the use of matte black on everything, hell, I’ve even seen a ‘murdered out’ Rolls Royce recently. But nothing beats a blacked out motorcycle, they just look tough. Add a good set of knobby tires and it instantly turns the look of the bike into something Steve McQueen would outrun Nazi’s on, or you’d find in a vintage motocross race. And that’s exactly the look these Italian brothers from Anvil Motociclette were going for. The latest bike to roll out of their Milan based shop is this rugged looking Triumph Scrambler, and they’ve done more than just add some knobby tires.

BMW R65 – Hook Motors & Totti Motori

Solid. If I was going to use one word to describe the BMW R series bikes built in the 80’s, that is the word I would use. From all angles you can see it’s packing some bulk, even from the rear, with it’s horizontal heads sticking out wide. As today’s feature bike from Hook Motors shows, they also make a solid base for a scrambler type build, it’s aesthetic giving the idea that if you can’t find a way around, you could just wind on the throttle and punch your way through. Fat offroad tyres, exhaust & handlebars all give the effect of something you could take to the trails on a Sunday, and be able to ride it home afterwards with little issue. Or in the words of Hook Motors “Designed for hill or dirt roads alike, this special motorcycle feels light and manageable. This bike is meant to be ridden hard”. Amen to that.

Montessa Enduro 75L – Macco Motors

Sometimes when it comes to customisation, less is more. Small touches can make for better build ideas than large sweeping changes in the course of a build. This can help to keep the original spirit of an already cool bike, whilst making the machine unique in own right, something not all builders are capable of. It’s definitely something that Macco Motors has now shown they can accomplish, in only the second build released from their workshop in the south of Spain. After being brought a barn find 1976 Montesa Enduro 75L, the two brothers have added the Macco Motors touch, while following the owners words: “I want people to put their touch on it, but I want people to say that’s a Montesa Enduro…” and isn’t she gorgeous?

The smell of the campfire. The feel of sleeping rough. The taste of freshly caught trout. And the silence… the pure, natural silence. Sound good? Yes? Too bad you’ll never hear it, because on a bike like this all you’d know would be the echoing tear of the unmuffled 4-into-1, the smell of wet leaves on exhaust, and the taste of flies in your teeth. 1994 Suzuki DR650 Street Dracker – Blitz Motorcycles

The French always seem to be on the forefront of fashion. Clothes, perfume, and now custom motorcycles. Not that I pay much attention to the first two. The latest fashion in custom cycles appears to be to use a dirt bike as the base for a build. Rugged, simple design makes for an excellent platform to build on, they’re cheap as well, and the ability to get that big bore thumper note all add to the desirability. Blitz Motorcycles knows this, and has used this thinking to the best of their abilities to create a level of custom rarely seen, all from the starting point of a simple trail bike. It just makes sense, oui?

La Corona’s ’81 BMW R100RS – “004”

La Corona Motorcycles is one of the latest shops in Europe to be producing this stripped back street tracker look. Based in Barcelona, this is their fourth build by the four passionate Spanish builders. Each of their builds has used a different donor bike, but they all have the ‘less is more’ La Corona aesthetic to them. This time they decided to use a 1981 BMW R100RS. It’s the second incarnation of this beemer, originally being built red with black detailing. The stock bike had a sizeable complete fairing, which was the first thing to go. Their goal, like most of their builds was to build something simple and “naked” – we think they acheived this with flying colors.

Kevils Speed Shop’s BMW R100 RS – “Le Mans”

If you are going to use a race car as inspiration for your BMW scrambler project, there is not a better, more famous or outrageously cool race car than the 1970 Gulf Porsche 917 featured in Steve McQueen’s movie ‘Le Mans”. The classic Gulf powder blue with marigold orange trim is one of the most iconic racing liveries in history. Kevin Hill from Kevils Speed Shop in Devon, England, decided to use these iconic colors and Porsche 917 as motivation for this sensational street scrambler he has named “Le Mans”. Kevin has a serious soft-spot for old BMW boxers and has built too many to count over the years. He started working in the motor industry straight from school in the early eighties and has had a varied career since, including industrial model making. “I suppose that’s how I got a keen eye for detail and design,” he says. It wasn’t until 2009 that he decided to make his passion of building custom motorcycles his full time job – and we’re sure glad he did.

Suzuki DR650 – Deus Bali

Bali is known as “the island with a thousand temples” but there’s only one temple most moto monks will be interested in visiting on their spiritual pilgrimage to Bali, and that’s the ‘Deus Temple of Enthusiasm‘ – it’s the place of worship for those that bow their helmet to the ‘God in the machine’. And the latest machine from the Bengkel boys is this dirty back track Suzuki DR650. Compared to most countries like Australia and America, the DR650 is not a very common bike in Indonesia. As the saying goes ‘they are rarer than rocking horse poo’, thanks to the strict Indonesian import laws making the importation of larger displacement bikes a very expensive venture due to the huge import taxes. So when one comes up for sale, Deus try to snatch them up.
