1969 HONDA CB750 ‘El Gato’ by Deranged Motorworks

Cypriot Alexandros Hadjicostas got the itch for bikes while tinkering on his humble Honda Chaly in his early teens. It wasn’t until years later though, after he saw Henrik Hansen’s short film on Shinya Kimura, that Alexandros caught the full-blown café racer bug. One problem though: “One thing I had to deal with was that whenever I said the name ‘café racer’ in Cyprus nobody had the slightest idea what I was talking about” he says. Not one to be deterred, he cast around for a build candidate. It took him a year, but eventually he found the right bike. A 1969 Honda CB750. The bike that last year Motor Cyclist magazine named ‘Motor Cycle of the Century’. He didn’t exactly snag a mint example, though. “When I found the bike it was in a terrible condition after being unused for more than 10 years and missing most of its parts. I had the chassis, engine, carburettors, exhaust and wheels…and that’s all I needed. I bought the bike for 500 euro and had a budget of 2000 euro to work with.”

That’s because the convertible we happen to be talking about here isn’t a little red Corvette or your daddy’s Thunderbird, but instead it’s the latest build by Florida’s Steel Bent Customs. This Nighthawk not only ticks all the right boxes in terms of clean lines, cool pipes, and sweet paint – it also manages to be both a café and a brat at the same time. Cool trick, huh?

1976 Honda CB750 Supersport – Ruby Red

“We all know the thrill of the hunt, scouring around for neglected machines in backyards and toolsheds. Peeking under windswept tarps, and the skip of a heartbeat when you see the outline of the infamous CB750 Supersport fuel tank in some dimly lit shed”. Dustin Kott describes it in such illuminated terms, and he should know because he has done it. Many of us have stolen glances into an open shed/garage door, hoping to find some forgotten beauty, but it’s only a lucky few who actually stumble across anything of note. Dustin Kott is one of the few, and this is his latest build: the 76 Ruby Red Supersport.

Ruleshaker’s Honda CB750 – “Old Spirit”

If you ever found yourself riding in France and the whim took you to see just how far you could go west-bound and down before you hit Spain, sooner or later you’d probably end up in Bayonne. Being the last real French city before travellers reach the border, it’s famous as a stop over on the route from Paris to Madrid. It’s also well-know for it’s chocolate, ham, and as being the oldest bull fighting city in France. But we think it’s probably time that something else was added to the list. Thanks to the city’s Ruleshaker Motorcycles, it seems to us that killing angry cows or eating cured swine just got a whole lot less interesting, due to a certain new Honda in town.

Every now and then on Pipeburn we’ll get a certain kind of bike. One that’s just, well, just right. Not too flashy yet not too vanilla. Not too cool yet not too square. Not too stock yet not too personalised. They are slippery little suckers that kind of defy description yet somehow speaks volumes about the state of play. Bikes that you innately feel will be the ones we’ll all look back in twenty year’s time and say, ‘now that is what the custom bike scene in the early part of the 21st century was all about. This is the latest bike from Steel Bent Customs. This is one hell of a CB750. This is that bike.

Studio Motor’s Honda CB750

I went for my first ride in a tuk tuk this week. Do you think I was in Singapore? Nope. Laos? Not even close. Thailand? No siree… I was actually in a workshop on the outskirts of Sydney. I got the idea of it though, garishly decorated and loud, a simple means to get around. Hailing from the same part of the world, comes a bike that is the healthy opposite to the idea of a tuk tuk. Well thought out aesthetics, the note of 736cc of Honda quad cylinder power, and a race fairing beat out of galvanised plate come together to show (once again) the talents of Donny Ariyanto at Studio Motor. If only as much thought went into tuk tuk design as went into this.

Honda CB750 K6 – “Scratch Monkee”

Recently the Wrenchmonkees (WM) decided to put down their wrenches, pack their duffle bags and hit the freeway to do what we all love to do – ride. “For the last four years we have been wrenching all the time and spending too little hours on the road” says Nicholas from WM. “That will change now”. The problem was Nicholas needed to build a bike really quickly with as little money as possible for the trip. “The donor bike was bought cheap and I didn’t have any money to use on the bike, of course we did it all ourself, but due to the lack of money reserve in the company I couldn’t afford to renovate the engine, and the whole bike was put together the last few days before our Monkee trip.” It’s definitely not the most beautiful bike the monkees have built but what it lacks in beauty it makes up for in character. Meet the “Scratch Monkee”…

Knobbly tires. They are fast becoming the defining custom bike trend of 2012. And with so many cool new bikes rolling on giant black rubber chunks out of workshops all over the place sporting them, it’s hard to argue to the contrary. And can you blame them? God knows, I love a good set of Firestones as much as the next hipster, but for my eyes it had gotten to the point where they were almost a non-choice; even a set of Dunlop Roadsmarts were starting to seem off-the-hook next to them. Exhibit A in this new wave of rubber rollers? Meet Steel Bent Custom’s CB 750 – a.k.a. “The Brat.”

Honda CB750 K7 Café Racer

The value of a vintage bike is usually calculated by how common that bike is in that particular country. It’s the basic laws of supply and demand. For instance, in America there’s still quite a lot of Honda CB750’s for sale – so they still offer pretty good value for money. However in a country like Greece, these Honda CB’s are extremely rare. So when Aris Pavlidis from Adrenaline Junkies in Greece found one laying in the back yard of a carpenters workshop, he couldn’t believe his luck. “It was in very bad shape but due to the rarity of this bike in Greece, I immediately went nuts about it, my mind started to make crazy plans for it” says Aris. So the next day, after a bit of haggling he bought it for $600 usd and got busy on his new found project.
