1997 Honda NX650 Dominator

The country of Wales is famous for producing two things, the singer Tom Jones and also for mining many precious metals. Ironically, precious metal was all that was left when Welshman Andrew Greenland stripped the plastic off his 1997 Honda Dominator and did a ground up rebuild. Andrew has a serious perchant for Honda Dominators and he does them impeccably. This isn’t the first Dominator he has built, and by the sounds of things it won’t be his last.

Evolution Motorsports 1976 Honda CB750

If having your handy work plastered up here on the pages of Tube deTemp Rouge earned you some sort of shiny golden statuette of a stylised, airborne motorbike with a windswept pilot barely managing to hold on while his rattly steed heads for the heart of the sun, then the boys at Evolution Motorsports would be kicking back right now, feet up, staring at four of the things up there on their greasy, old spark plug infested mantle piece. Undoubtedly the initial honour of owning one will have worn off by now, and the first spate of polishing and dusting and showing it to everyone who entered the shop will have subsided, now replaced with casual comedic additions to them including a beer bottle cap as a hat, some racing numbers added with a sharpie, and even a stupendous appendage grafted onto trophy number 2 using some used pink gum. But why? Because of late they have had something else to occupy their crafty, talented minds. What have they been cutting their fingers on and greasing up their cuticles with, you ask? This is what.

1969 Honda S90 Café Racer

Most motorcycle shops start by building bikes for a living and then end up printing the odd tee with their logo on it to sell on the side. Not these guys. They started a clothing label that now builds bikes on the side. Uprising is label designed by two guys from Jakarta, Ariadi Poernomo and Pedi Tahir. “30 year old kids with motorcycles in our hearts,” says Ariadi. “Our clothing is coming out later this year and we’ve always teamed up with local talented builders to make our rides; we’ve decided we wanted it to be part of the brand… which is why all our bikes are a collaboration. But sooner or later we are planning to have our own workshop. We do sell these bikes afterwards, so we can build more new stuff.” They have many bikes on the go at the moment but their latest is this stunning 1969 honda s90 café racer.

Honda CL360

Living in Australia we sometimes forget how cold it can get in other parts of the world. On the recent Pipeburn ride I heard many grown men whining about how cold the early morning was in Sydney and it was only 16˙C (60˙ fahrenheit). So I take my mohair beanie off to guys like Aaron Ruse from Illinois who has spent the last American winter building a bike in freezing temperatures in his unheated concrete garage. Aaron is a young guy who recently decided it was time to learn some wrenching skills and build his first bike. “I got interested in motorcycles last summer as a way to learn about basic mechanics,” says Aaron. This interest quickly grew into a love for classic motorcycles. He was inspired by his uncle R.J. Ruse and his buddies who restore classic bikes, along with a new friendship with Team Hansan Racing’s Terry Naughtin, and set out to build a cafe racer last winter. “I found a beat up ’75 CL360 and a badly dented and rusted CB350f tank in a back junk yard of a local motorcycle shop and set to work”.

The Beatles. A great band. Actually, the greatest band. And do you know why they rock so many record collections and get raved about so much, so many years after they split up? It’s because they were so amazingly eclectic. In other words they weren’t slaves to one particular style of music but instead they simply had superbly developed taste, allowing them to cherry pick sounds and styles from pretty much any musical source they liked and somehow transform it into an amazing song that would inevitably top the charts globally. Only a band like that can manage to stay so popular and so loved for so long. If they had just re-written “Love Me Do” over and over again they would have been a flash in the pan, but instead they pushed themselves to do more, and to do it better.

1975 Honda CB550K – “Le Mans Special”

Want to freak out a graphic designer? Make him pray to a higher power and start rocking back and forth on his fancy bent-wood chair. Then give him a job where he can only use two colours – safety orange and turquoise, and then watch him squirm. All the rules of colour theory say “no, this absolutely cannot work.” And yet behold the beauty that is the Gulf Oil livery. Is that angels I hear? Beautiful retro motor racing angels playing heavenly engine music through trumpets that look remarkably like velocity stacks? Chris Trotter from Bozeman, Montana heard that music too. And that music said unto him “build the world’s sweetest Honda cafe racer and paint it like the world’s coolest race car, then send it over to those incredibly great guys at Pipeburn so that they may show it to the world.” And beholdeth, he did. And it was good.

Honda CB350 Café Racer

Michael LaFountain from Raccia Motorcycles has been obsessed with motorcycles ever since he built his first bike when he was 17 years old. Little did he know that building that motorcycle would shape the course of his life for the next 16 years. “I’ve been buying and recreating bikes ever since” says Michael. “I’ve built British and Italian motorbikes in the past but I have found the Japanese bikes to be more of a challenge due to the fact that the a large majority of the British and Italian bikes were beautiful to begin with, unlike a lot of Japanese bikes.”

Honda CB750 Café Racer

I stumbled upon this thing of beauty on a blog called Anatomy of a Cafe Racer. The bike was built by a talented young guy from Kansas called Pete (AKA Pistol Pete). After building it over a two year period, he finally finished it last week. Pipeburn Video: Bonita

As you may remember, we recently featured a very beautiful Honda cafe racer called “Bonita” that got quite a respectable response from you, the good readers of this here blog. Actually, it was more like Beatles riot come to think of it. Basking in the post-victory afterglow, Pepe and I were shooting the poop on all things Bonita, and he mentioned that he was really impressed with the two Deus videos we had recently posted. Luckily for us (or more correctly, me) it didn’t take a genius to figure out what to do next; we’d celebrate the the hottest girl we knew using the magic of modern video. And after many hiccups (including delaying the shoot due to a heatwave) we have managed to finish the thing. What an epic odyssey. Hope you like it.

140cc Racer

They say good things happen in threes. Or is that bad things? Either way, this is the third low displacement bike we have featured in a row — and who could blame us. Just like the ‘Minimus’, this little beauty is another unique creation that’s in the running for Bike of the Month on Do The Ton. The bike was built by Brad Smith who is a art school grad turned contractor who has “found a new outlet” for his creativity. “I just get ideas of what I think would be a cool bike and I find a way to build it” Brad says. “So that said, I saw a video on Youtube of a Kreidler van venn 50cc GP bike and thought it was one of the coolest little motorcycles I have ever seen. Then I saw some pics of RC116, so I just wanted to build something in the spirit of those bikes.” When I look at the two bikes Brad used for inspiration, I think he nailed it.
