Wheels & Waves
Pipeburn was lucky enough to be invited by Royal Enfield to attend the 2017 Wheels & Waves show in Biarritz. While we did our fair share of socialising and sun soaking, we were also there to document something a little special. For the 2017 show, Royal Enfield teamed up with Leicester shop Sinroja Motorcycles to make not one, but two custom bikes especially for the event.
I’ve wanted to go to Wheels and Waves since I first heard of it. I’ve spent half of my life around bikes but never really got into any of the scenes in the north of England – sportsbikes, full-dress Harleys, classics or streetfighters. The new custom scene hasn’t taken root here yet, so for a shed monkey like me with a preference for hands-on over wallet-out, this seemed the place to go. Aboard my rebuilt W650 tracker, I rode the 1600-mile round trip from Leeds to Biarritz with my camera gear on my back, accompanied by a mate on his much-admired Honda 400/4 café racer. Here’s the highlights.
Claiming the title of ‘Best Bike Show in the World’ is no mean feat. With competition from the likes of The One show in Oregon and the AMD World Championships, to land a title like that would take some doing. And even though it’s just little old us giving out the gold, we’d probably forego the subzero conditions in Portland and give the billetesque AMD a miss. Where would we cast our vote you may or may not ask? Wheels & Waves, that’s where. With a sweet French summer on offer and more good food than your average Michelin-starred restaurant, we’d be in beautiful Biarritz. This year a barrage of biking celebs made an appearance, including the Boys from Blitz, the very dapper Paul d’Orleans and even America’s Roland Sands. Wish you were there? So do we. But fear not, because the boys from Southsiders Motorcycle Club attended for us – and they took a whole bunch of video cameras to record the bountiful biking shenanigans for posterity.
