After a one year hiatus the good folk at Bandit9 have returned to the custom scene with a bang. This time around they’re leading with this incredible Harley Davidson 750 Street, dubbed ‘The Dark Side’. First up, it’s not named after Star Wars – the team actually drew their inspiration from the dark side of the moon. But I can’t help but see more than a little Vader in the lines of this remarkable build.
There is a famous quote that goes something like this. “No one ever achieved greatness by playing it safe.” And yet for the vast majority of us, we play it safe all of our lives. We stay at the job we don’t love because it pays the bills. We eat the same foods. We take the same road to work and we go to the same draw of clothes day in and day out. This is where the custom motorcycle scene plays a significant role in the lives of many. It’s where they throw off the shackles, live on the wild side and do things differently with a license for freedom they don’t normally afford themselves. But one man takes that freedom even further; he pushes the limits of motorcycle design so far his inspiration is actually drawn from art, sci-fi films and a desire to reach the ultimate Zen state of mind. Daryl “Dazza” Villanueva of Bandit9 is back and his latest limited production run machine, known as EDEN, is the ultimate expression of not playing it safe.
Daryl “Dazza” Villanueva of Bandit9 fame is back and once again he has left convention at the door, stepped through a worm hole and pieced together a futuristic master piece that takes its inspiration from an old favourite, a 1967 Honda Supersport 125. “I’m back in Saigon after living in Beijing. The beauty of starting over is you feel like anything is possible, which coincidentally, I feel is lacking in the motorcycle industry. A sense of possibility.” So he has done exactly that; created a new fully functional piece of futuristic riding possibilities known as ‘AVA’ and available in a limited run of just nine, there are already orders from the US, Europe, and the Middle East. Five months ago when the project began Daryl had a very clear vision “I wanted something that didn’t look like it came from this era but from the generation ahead.” Inspiration from the past, a design for the future and all from right now as everything on the bike is brand new.
One of the nicest things about the hungry beast that’s Pipeburn.com is that you get to meet new people. We literally make contact with half a dozen new builders every week who all keen to show us their wares. What’s more, we end up getting to know them quite well. Here’s a builder I have been shooting the poop with on and off for two years now, and even through I’ve never actually met him, I’m sure that we’d get on like a house on fire. This is his fifth bike to be featured on the site. Around here we know him as ‘Dazza’, but you’ll should probably call him by his real name – Daryl Villanueva, head of Beijing’s Bandit9 Motorcycle Design.

Now it’s time for a bit of education. Fear not, we won’t be attempting any calculus and the chances of us testing you are slim at best. See, in order to fully appreciate the bike you see before you, we’ll have to indulge in a little ancient Greek mythology as this bike has been inspired by a Hellenic demigod by the name of Hephaestus. If you were a metal worker, craftsman, blacksmith or sculptor in ancient times, chances are you would have been spilling a red wine libation to him on a regular basis. And as his symbols were a hammer and an anvil, it makes you wonder if more of us modern types shouldn’t be reconsidering our choice of big man in the sky. And as a matter of fact, there is at least one modern guy who’s done just that. His name is Daryl, and he’s the man who built the coolest Honda Bros this world, or any other, has ever seen.

Forget the intro paragraph where I try and be clever with my big vocabulary and witty banter. Forget the jokes about really, really black things. And forget the interesting back story about Chinese Army motorbikes and a Filipino guy living in Beijing. Ahhh, 2012… a superb year for custom bikes, yes? Scott and I have just spent a quiet evening in, sitting around the drawing room table while sampling some of this year’s best vintages. We’ve had a few cheeky German numbers. One or two North American examples and a decent tipple of some fine Australian produce. Were we Impressed? Naturally. Looking back at our 2011 list, it’s hard not to be taken with the overall rise in quality of this year’s selection – one that was hand-picked by us according to your comments, Facebook likes, and with an added pinch of ‘just because’. So here’s cheers to all the makers who were generous enough to bless us with their hard work, and here’s another one to all of you readers for frequenting this fine establishment. The first vintage on this year’s list is a cheeky little number from one of Arizona’s finest makers, the very talented Del Prado brothers, which earnt a record-breaking 1.7k Facebook likes. It must be something in the New River soil.

And in the big, fancy pants world of business and money, when you see a hot prospect you snap it up and get on board in the hope that you can turn a relatively small investment into a big pile of cash that rains down on you like a money storm – or a “golden shower,” if you will. Now the world of custom motorbikes seldom ever sees such large amounts of money, but if it did and if this here Pipeburn blog were a strange kind of “cool bikes and how to grow your personal wealth” weird-ass hybrid website, then I’d be strongly recommending that you all buy stocks in Beijing’s Bandit 9 Customs. Believe you me, these guys are going places and the man in the director’s chair drinking the single malt and shouting at people on his phone is none other than the head-smackingly talented Daryl Villanueva. We’ve featured his great work before, and now we are very proud to exclusively reveal his second build, the stunning “Magnus”.
