BAD COP, BADDER COP. VTR’s ‘Polizia 1.9’ Blown BMW Nitrous Racer

Posted on June 27, 2018 by Andrew in Classic, Racer. No Comments

What is it about ex-police vehicles? The thought of nabbing something that used to enforce the law seems to really float our boats. Hell, muscle cars seem to increase in value if they were used by the boys in blue. But there’s a perverse pleasure at play when you take an ex-police bike a turn it into a drag racer…

THE LOW ROAD. Bernard Mont’s ‘Nowhere Faster’ Nitrous Ducati Sprint Racer

Posted on May 11, 2018 by Andrew in Racer. No Comments

They’re called the ‘Sultans of Sprint’ and the asphalt 1/8th mile is the troposphere where they do battle, on bikes as bananas as those old planes. Very few fulfil that centuries old ethos like Belgium’s Bernard Mont and in 2018 he’s returned with a lay down and mash the gas…

FRIENDS OF DEATH. Radical Guzzi’s Deadly Cool Nitrous Sprint Racer

Posted on August 16, 2017 by Andrew in Café Racer, Racer. 23 comments

When it comes to old-school motorcycle racers, they don’t come much cooler than England’s Bill Lomas. Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. Two-time World Champion. Two-time Isle of Man TT winner. Moto Guzzi V8 rider. And to gild the lily, he was a bit of a movie star to boot. Starring in the 1957 film, ‘I Fidanzati Della Morte’ or ‘Friends of Death’, he’s not half bad. Germany’s Radical Guzzi decided they wanted to honour him by building a bike in his name, and this nitrous beast named ’Fidanzata’ is what they came up with.

A headless chicken earning $50,000 a month, a female racer beating up on the boys and an Indian Scout with a 1:1 power to weight ratio. These are not old wives tales, stories from someone three sheets to the wind or plucked from an episode of Ripley’s Believe It or Not. All these things are true and they form the foundation of one incredible machine that took home the top trophy at its first race meeting. Having been selected by Indian to undertake the build Nik, Fabien Ale and Zesi at Switzerland’s Young Guns Speed Shop haven’t let down the big American maker. Ah, the 70’s – the golden age of motorsport, manliness and lung cancer. That trio sat at the forefront of F1 during an incredible decade that made legends and took lives. Years later a loose collection of individuals in Italy dubbed the Milano Cafe Racers have drawn inspiration from that period to craft Ciaparat – a gorgeous 1995 Ducati Monster built to kick ass at the strangest racing series we’ve ever heard of.

The rise and rise of eighth mile sprint racing in Europe has proved a real goldmine for those of us interested in custom drag bikes. Shops from all across Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy are now feverishly building bigger and better bikes while drafting increasingly skilled riders to see if they can’t make it to the top of this new league. One such hive of speed is South German shop Kraftstoffschmiede, owned and run by Philipp Ludwig. And this lower-than-low Beemer beast is his latest masterful creation.

JL Mekaniikka Supercharged Nitrous Jawa 500

That front tire looks a little flat – though I’d guess it doesn’t spend much time on the ground

Isolation does strange things to people. Think about Jack Nicholson in The Shining or the UNAbomber. Leave a man all alone with nothing else but his thoughts and the wilderness and you’re bound to end up with your own little Apocalypse Now of one kind or another. But what if you could channel all that craziness and obsession into something constructive? Like, say… a motorbike. What do you think a man could achieve then? Whatever it would be, you can bet it’d be original, fast, and just a little bit crazy. My fellow Pipeburnians, meet Finnlandian Janne Leiman and his Jawa 500 from Mänttä, which roughly translates to “Twin Peaks” in English. No, really.
