It’s 2017 and I find myself in a dilemma involving lack of time and money. Questioning how we would build our next custom as well as a new bike to race in the American Flat Track series, a decision was made to kill two birds with one stone. Why not build a custom worthy of the race track and a race bike worthy of being a custom piece of two-wheel art? Why not, indeed!
Keen-eyed readers of these pages will no doubt be familiar with Dutch motorcycle workshop Moto Adonis. Just a few months back they turned out this spectacular R1100S build that’s equal parts beautiful and terrific to ride. This time around Daan Borsje and his team have returned to the marque, crafting this incredible cafe racer based around a venerable 1987 BMW K75 tourer.
The modern retro market is booming and where once it was a niche for a few manufacturers, it is now a profitable sector across the board. There are an endless number of machines to choose from. And while they retain much of their classic styling to appease the retro loving eye, there is nothing old school about their functionality. A Royal Enfield is really the only modern machine that gives that true vintage bike feel; chunky gearbox clicks and a bike that you ride and doesn’t ride you. Santiago García of Corb Motorcycles in the beautiful Catalonia region of Spain craved just such a machine. So he created a 2003 Royal Enfield Bullet known as “The Raven 500” – a fitting doff of the cap to classic British engineering.
It’s fair to say that we’re all very used to the notion of one bike, one builder. While shops may work with an upholsterer or painter to help their project look it’s best, we very rarely see multiple builders working together on the same bike. Well, now its time to try something a little different. Namely, a three-builder collaboration. Sure, it could end up a dog’s breakfast. But what if instead it took the best skills of all three players and ended up with something superlative? Here’s a clearly superlative HD 883XL from Kyoto’s Hirock, by way of Nice Motorcycles and Plus Cycles, too.
New tools customising old bikes. If you had to be blunt about it, that’s probably how you’d surmise the current custom bike scene. You need only to look at the old guard with their thinly veiled cries denigrating the beards and beanies to see that a ‘new tool’ generation has taken over from the old one. But today’s bike flips that equation on its coiffured head. With tools that date back to New York in the 1880s and a bike that’s barely out of diapers, today’s Honda XR650L from Hill Moto, still ticks all the cool custom boxes.
The Bultaco Campera Agricultura was about as far as a bike can get from bedroom wall poster material. As you might garner from the name, it was a bike more at home in the fields chasing cows than it was on the racetrack chasing pole position. But that didn’t let France’s Freeride Moto stop them. Taking their inspiration from the altogether more sexy Bultaco TSS, they rolled up their sleeves, scrubbed off the cow cakes and made a little yellow bullet that will inspire the inner kid racer in all of us.
Harley’s original XR750s are the stuff of legend. With a winning streak that started in 1972 and is still being felt in flat tracking today, many argue that it’s the world’s most winningest motorcycle. Which is a pretty amazing claim to fame, when you think about it. The Netherland’s Bart Verstijnen knew he could build his own XR750 if he really put his mind to it. And once you see the twin Mikuni’s, you know this isn’t just a tepid homage. Oh no. This is the real deal.
We’ve been told more than once by keyboard warriors that our taste in bikes sucks. But in a welcome twist of fate, that comment is absolutely correct for tonight’s ride. Why? Because this beautiful bike was manufactured by the industrial powerhouse of Fisker & Nielsen in Copenhagen; better known to you and I as the Nilfisk vacuum company. And if there’s ever a motorcycle we’d like to see brought back to life by its modern patent owners, it’d be this one. So direct from Russia’s Motorworld by V. It can take years. Each second feels like an eternity. From the moment you spot ‘the one’ crossing the road in front of you until the day you finally get up close and personal. But when we spotted this sporty shorty in the workshop corner of Malaysia’s Beautiful Machines, we knew we had to have her. That was when they were preparing their incredible ‘Monster’ for the Yokohama MoonEyes Hot Rod & Custom Show. But we couldn’t just show her off to you in any old state, so we took one for the team and waited until we could get just the right shots. Now for her big debut we can finally present ‘Puting Beliung’; it means ‘Tornado’ and she’s a Harley Davidson Sportster XL1200N Nightster that’ll literally sweep you off your feet.
As much as I like the bikes featured on Pipeburn, sometimes I’m left wondering – what are they actually like to ride? They’re always cool as hell but sometimes I try not to think about what they’d be like to throw a leg over. Half an inch of suspension travel on the rear sure makes for a mean looking stance – but how would it fare over a suburban speed hump? That old air-cooled single pot 250 looks lean, but how far would you get on the interstate before your handlebars are being dragged out of the grill of a Scania?
