Wherever in the world you go, it’s not long before you find a kindred spirit who shares a love for motorcycles; it’s a truly universal language. But while that passion burns deep across the globe, nowhere is it so heavily ingrained in the national psyche than in the home of road racing, Northern Ireland. So it should come as no surprise that Chris Martin of Belfast got his first bike from his Granny when he was just a wee boy, went to the races with his Dad and now has turned his attention to hand shaping metal and building custom creations. His latest, a Yamaha XT550 will hoon up any hill, haul along on any highway and looks mega doing it.

When Diamond Atelier first burst onto the scene in 2013 with its inaugural BMW R80 project, it was abundantly clear that the two 20-something-year-old German builders possessed a near-prodigious level of talent and skill when it came to customizing motorcycles. And while the world-renowned shop has stepped out of the limelight for the majority of 2019, that doesn’t mean major moves weren’t happening behind closed doors.
Honda CB4X Concept
Designed by Honda’s European R&D team lead by Valerio Aiello, the CB4X is Big Red’s latest CBR650F-based concept bike. The 4X boasts a sharp futuristic design with a one-piece tank and front-fairing unit with wing-esque protrusions just above the radiator, and a host of LED lights tucked beneath the nose, resulting in a smooth form somewhat reminiscent of race bodywork. The front of the bike also sports aggressive looking hand guards, an adjustable windscreen, Ohlins forks, and a dual disc Brembo brake setup.
It seems fitting on the day over 100,000 gentlefolk take to the streets riding for mental health and prostate cancer on the annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, we would show our support for this legendary group based in Sydney called the Lost Motos. Lost Motos is all about breaking down the stigma of men’s mental health, with their private support group on Facebook, they have been able to create a community where each person that is part of it is able to get support, encouragement and be part of a like-minded community.
Lost Motos was born out of the need of a listening ear, an empathetic heart and a revving motorcycle to make it through some tough times. What grew from a humble motorcycle trip between a few mates is now an online support group for men. A place to be vulnerable and emotional within a supportive environment surrounded by the love of motorcycles.
There’s no denying the world of video content is becoming a bigger part of our daily lives. It’s something we want to start featuring more of and even create our own Pipeburn video content. I’m currently mid-build on two Adventure projects and we’re going to be walking you through, in a series of step-by-step YouTube videos. Starting off with a 2006 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200C. This bike, and a Nemesis 400 to come will be used on new film project we’re working on with some of Australia’s most exciting motorcycle personalities. For now though I’m focussing my energy on prepping this Harley to go to hell and back.
This Sportster is a personal project, I want to test new ideas, build out concepts I’ve had in my head for a while and really experiment with just how you turn a 1200cc highway-puppy into a dirt-fighting-dog. The key to this build is stripping weight, improving handling and allowing the bike to put its torquey motor to good use off-road. Turning a Sportster into an adventure-ready off-road scrambler will be a challenge, but that’s exactly why I chose it.
Yesterday was International Female Ride Day, so we thought it would be fitting to start by showcasing some inspirational females who have all made an impact on the motorcycle industry in their own way. First up we have the legendary Jolene Van Vugt, who is the first woman to backflip a full-sized dirt bike. She is also the holder of many Guinness World Records, and was a regular on the hugely successful Nitro Circus. She is now a stunt woman and Indian Motorcycles sponsored rider, who has definitely helped pave the way for the next generation of female riders.
Being the custom bike freaks that we all are, it’s easy to forget that it’s not always about the bike. Sometimes it’s that perfect combination of bike, landscape, and weather that just comes together to make those bucket list moments you’ll be smiling about in your final hours….
If it’s true that one’s destination is never a place, but always a new way of seeing things, then surely a trip to the Himalaya’s can lead to a vision where anything is possible. The Yamaha XS650 has been a mainstay of the custom motorcycle revival and even before they were being cafe’d they were being cut up and bobbed…
There’s no argument that Italy’s Officine Rosssopuro do the best-looking Moto Guzzi customs on the scene. The head of the shop, Filippo Barbacane, never takes the easy route with his builds. He mixes and matches engines and final drive components and the end result is always a show-stopper…
