It’s hard not to look back at your first motorcycle with a distinct admiration and nostalgia, no matter how beat-up or prone-to-error it may have been. Much like your first love, there’s something highly-sentimental about sharing a host of new emotions, sensations, and experiences with your first motorcycle. For Jonathan “Jonno” Shakesby, his introduction to the world of riding came on a 1980 Suzuki GS850G in 1989. Over a quarter-of-a-century, four-continents, and more than three-dozen bikes later, and the British expat still holds a special place in his heart for the early ‘80s UJM.

There can be a simple price to pay when you choose to roll with the pack and conform to what the current culture demands; everyone else is happy but yourself! For Victor Dikanchev obeying the rules was never going to be an option, he’d build his bike the way he wanted no matter the reaction. Living in Bulgaria where there is almost no bike scene anyway, his motorcycle would become an extension of himself. PURVEYORS OF STYLE: Triumph Thruxton R by Untitled Motorcycles

When purveyors of sophistication and style for more than half a century, GQ Magazine, were looking for someone to build them a bike to match their ethos they knew exactly where to turn. They sent a brand new Thruxton R to Adam Kay of London’s Untitled Motorcycles, a man who has built a plethora of perfectly fashioned customs over the years. It’s little wonder his skills are in such high demand but having built the GQ bike on a serious deadline, Adam is back with another Triumph Thruxton R 1200 for one very lucky client, who was seeking the perfect modern cafe classic.

WHEN SOMEDAY IS TODAY: Ducati Multistrada 1000S DS by Nico Dragoni Motociclette

Unlike the Hypermotard, MH900e, Supermono, and Sport Classic, Pierre Terblanche’s design for the original Ducati Multistrada received a less-than-positive reception from the motorcycling public upon its release. Routinely included (and ranking high) on lists of the ugliest motorcycles in modern history, the first-gen Multistrada was all kinds of awkward. Between the cyclops headlight, a windscreen and fairing top that turned with the forks, and a sporty 999-esque tail that just didn’t mesh well with the trailie-vibe, the Multistrada was largely regarded as a visual mess.

Artists and builders tend to be extremely critical of their own work. With the benefit of hindsight, it can be hard not to go back and ponder all the things you would have done differently were you given a chance to turn back the clock and take a second crack at an earlier completed work. But after Italy’s Ludwig Motorcycles had one of its 2017 builds suffer a crash, the shop was given the opportunity to turn all those would-haves and should-haves into reality.

DROP DEAD GORGEOUS: 1986 Ducati Cagiva Alazzurra

For just over a decade, beginning in the early ’80s, the Cagiva brand was the king and dominant force in Italian motorcycling. Winning world championships, Dakar Rally’s and buying out Ducati, Husqvarna, MV Agusta and Moto Morini; but all that is over! What we do have as the company’s legacy is the beloved brands it managed to save and a hand full of models from that glorious period worthy of celebration. Based on the beautiful Ducati Pantah, the Cagiva Alazzurra is one such bike and with a band of merry men, Sydney’s Ash Kollmorgen has taken this 1986 model and made an exquisite custom cafe racer.

RACE READY: Triumph Legend TT ‘Bob’ by Mr Martini

Produced from 1998 to 2001, Triumph’s Legend TT is basically a more affordable, less flashy version of the Thunderbird 900. The running gear and amenities are pretty unremarkable, but it features the Hinckley firm’s famous three-banger and a decent enough frame. So with a few performance parts and a cosmetic redesign, Nicola Martini of Italy’s Mr. Martini fame, reasoned it’d make for a solid base for his next project bike. So a 2001 Legend TT donor was sourced, and the build — dubbed “Bob” — got underway.

PAIR OF ACES: Kaspeed SevenFifty Limited Series

There is a fear amongst some about handing over large amounts of money for a custom motorcycle and with more manufacturers offering factory-tuned machines complete with a warranty, that decision can be even harder. But to prove you can have the best of both worlds, Germany’s Kaspeed Custom Motorcycles have crafted a limited run special, developed and tested for over a year on their in-house prototype. Based on late ’90s Honda CB750s and available in both Racer and Heritage specification, the first two bikes from the company’s SevenFifty range are here. With only 10 available you’ll have to be quick, as bikes #1 and #2 are already in their owner’s hands and boy are they pleased.
