When you’re a Ford Mustang owner but all you want to do is ride around, what better way to do it than to have a matching motorcycle parked in the garage. Living in the beautiful seaside city of Limassol, Cyprus, there is no shortage of spectacular roads to enjoy and vistas to appreciate when parked up. So to make the dream a reality the original importer of the bike, Petros Louca of Underground Custom Cycles was tracked down to carry out the build. With the Mustang as his muse he emerged from his workshop with the perfect CX500 cafe racer, a Cypriot chariot to carve up the coastline.

Road rules and regulations can be the bane of a custom bike builder’s existence, the strict confines of the law chipping away at the rebels born free soul. In Germany the TUV certification to get a motorcycle road-legal adds even more stress, meaning many builders thoroughly design a bike before spinning a spanner. But for Thomas Lambert of Elemental Custom Cycles, located near Nuremberg, he decided on this project to visualise and build as he went. Embracing the more organic process until it revealed this stunning Honda CB750 of the highest quality.

IT’S A SMALL WORLD: 1972 Honda Chaly

There is an idea in some motorcycle cultures, that having a bigger bike isn’t necessarily better. I can agree with this line of thought. I remember opening up the throttle in sixth gear on my Suzuki 250, leaning into a corner, feeling like a MotoGP racer and seeing that the bike was just nudging 95kmh. This culture of smaller is better is prevalent in South East Asia, where big capacity bikes are not an option, yet the desire to customise bikes is still strong. This part of the world is where our story begins, with Callum Blackmore discovering in Thailand exactly what he was looking for in a motorcycle. And so today we feature the fruit of his labour, his 1972 Honda Chaly Custom.

The popularity of certain models in the custom bike industry often makes total sense and at other times boggles the mind. Entire subcultures with a supporting aftermarket can grow around one particular bike while its direct competitors from other manufacturers are all but forgotten. But away from the scene’s strongholds and isolated from peer pressure, Bulgaria’s Ivan Mushev chose a model we’ve only featured twice in Pipeburn’s ten years. Taking a Honda Hornet 600 and turning it into a cafe-fighter that’s a rolling promotion for his newly formed outfit Bull Moto Custom.

Much like your first love, there’s something highly-sentimental about sharing a host of new emotions, sensations, and experiences with your first motorcycle. For Jonathan “Jonno” Shakesby, his introduction to the world of riding came on a 1980 Suzuki GS850G in 1989. Over a quarter-of-a-century, four-continents, and more than three-dozen bikes later, and the British expat still holds a special place in his heart for the early ‘80s UJM.

Tributes can take on many forms, the words offered at a funeral or a photo that lives on the wall. But there are others whose lives demand so much more, having lived the maxim, ‘Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.’ Having walked in his older brother’s influential shadow, often just making the tea that fuelled both stories and bike builds, Alec Birkbeck knew his ultimate eulogy had to be forged in steel. With guidance from above and a desire to live up to his brother’s natural gift, it’s a stunning Yamaha TR1 just for Kevin.
