Moto Guzzi Le Mans

Japanese Ritmo-sereno are famous for their BMW cafe racers. However their website is full of other european bikes like this beautiful Moto Guzzi Le Mans. The Le Mans was Moto Guzzi’s top sports bike in the 80’s. The big bore lOOOcc version was a welcome addition in 1985 but is essentially similar to the 850 Le Mans they had been producing. We wanted to give you the before and after shots of this bike to show the work thats gone into the build. Ritmo have taken this dated Guzzi and turned it into a cafe masterpiece. With its beautiful cafe race seat, purple racer fairing and 2-in-1 stainless steel exhaust. We simply love it.

Drag Star Cafe Racer

This is a conversion of a 1998 Yamaha XVS 650 Drag Star (Star V Star 650 in the US) called the Beachstar. It’s been described as a cross between a cafe racer and a board tracker. With or without the 60’s looking fairing this bike looks awesome. The Beachstar was built by a German by the name of Mario Baer. Baer needed only one summer to modify this old 1998 Yamaha Drag Star, working only in the evenings. Thats impressive work. It’s not just a show bike either, it’s also a commuter. He rides the Beachstar to work nearly every day and last year the Beachstar won some impressive shows including the world-renowned 2008 Intermot show in Cologne. We are looking forward to seeing Baer’s next project which he describes as “Hmmm…something exceptionally spectacular with a huge rear wheel and a small front wheel. Something completely crazy!”. Goldwing Cafe Racer

Now we’ve seen it all. This is a 1976 Honda GL1000 Goldwing. Yes you heard me right, a Goldwing Cafe Racer. The GL1000 was one of the original Goldwings before they incorporated the fairing into the main body. Would never have thought we’d see it turned into a cafe racer. Everything was fabricated by a GW enthusist from Sweden. The lamp hood is from a HD night rod, and the muffler is a Yoshimura. Phantom Cafe Racer

This one off Phantom-Cafe’ racer is built on a 1980 Yamaha XJ 650 chassis with a direct drive shaft -replacing the early chain drive. The 650 cc motor had been reworked to add another 100cc to accommodate the added weight of the heavy chrome plated body. This custom design was built & owned by the legendary Mr. William L. Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was best know for being the V.P. of the design staff for GM. He was responsible for designs that produced 72 million cars, including the Chev Camaro, Pontiac Firebird and his favourite the Corvette. We think his car designs are better but big points for originality.

CB350F Cafe Racer

Hail the Honda! The CB350F is one of the smallest and most sophisticated mass produced four-cylinders ever built. It was only built for two years from 1972-74. This 1974 Honda CB350F Cafe Racer was recently sold on ebay. The seller threw in the url cb350F.com to sweeten the deal. Judging by the new owners comments on his site like “sexist bike on the planet” he is obviously head over heals in love with his new purchase. Why wouldn’t he be? It’s a beautiful example of what a classic cafe racer should look like. Clip-ons, uncomfortable cafe seat and lots of chrome. For more pics check out this flicr gallery.

Speer Motorcycles

We love discovering custom shops in our own backyard. These guys are called Speer Motorcycles and are based in Melbourne, Australia. They do a mixture of servicing, restoring and customizing of vintage, unique and performance bikes. Here’s two of their latest projects, the first is a Suzuki T500 cafe racer. Piano Mans Cafe Racer

Billy Joel isn’t just into Harley Davidsons. He actually has over 30 bikes with loads of cafe racers and bobbers. 20 of his bikes are on display in New York at Christy’s Art Center. It’s called ‘The Motorcycle as Art and Icon’ and we wish we were in NY to check it out. His beautiful Royal Enfield cafe racer built by Mike DePalo of UK Motorsports is among them. Monkee Magic

We are big fans of the Wrench Monkees from Denmark, Copenhagen. They have so many great bikes on their website but this Honda CB750 is one of our favourites. They mix up their project bikes from the classic SR500 and XS650 through to some less obvious rides like the z750B and Z1000A. Whatever the model they are turning them all into unique custom bikes that we really dig.

Kawasaki KZ400

This is a bike that doesn’t get much airplay anymore. Apart from the legendary KZ400.com (appropriate name). Originally run by Odd Ivar Bekkelund, who was obsessed with the KZ400. Unfortunatley he passed away last year (2008) and his son has left all his Dads posts and hard work up in memory of his Dad. The “original” Kawasaki KZ400 was a 398cc twin cylinder produced from 1974-1984. These motorcycles were marketed as fuel efficient transportation back in the 70’s. So you could say they were like the Prius of the bike world. It doesn’t make a bad Cafe racer either.

The Norvin

The Norvin is a very beautiful bike. It’s essentially a Vincent engine mounted in a Norton frame and has been made since the 1950’s. It is such an impressive looking 1000cc engine but does come with a downside. This downside is the weight of the Vincent engine which obviously effects the handling of the bike. Whatever the case it’s still a classic motorcycle that has made it’s place in cafe racer history.  Hailwood Motorcycle Restorations in the U.K still builds brand-new 1000cc to 1200cc Vincent motors to modern specs if you are in that part of the world.
