HIGH CALIBRE: BMW R100 ‘VULCAN’ by Ironwood Custom Motorcycles

Posted on October 23, 2019 by Scott in Bobber, Classic. No Comments

Written by Tim Huber.

Each year, motorcycle manufacturers are faced with the challenge of building on, and improving the outgoing model year; finding ways to bolster performance; shave off weight; and ultimately outdo their previous offering; before starting the whole process over the following year. Ironwood Custom Motorcycles faces a similar struggle; after completing one of its signature bratted and bobbed BMW’s, the Dutch shop is routinely forced to discover new avenues to one-upping itself. This is by no means an easy feat considering the caliber of IWC’s work, though with its latest Bavarian-based project, it’s managed to deliver in spades.

At Pipeburn we’ve seen more stripped-back airheads than a college quarterback. So it takes something special for our jaws to hit the floor. And this, a 1976 BMW R100 by Belarusian shop Recast Moto, is pretty damn special. Recast are fans of the R series. “They’re classic airheads that have passed the test of time…”

Listen to any good rock song from across the ages and that rhythmic pulse that you tap your foot to is provided by the bass player. Often maligned, rarely the charismatic front man, what they provide is the reliable foundation for every great song and band…

THE BOLD BAVARIAN. Dustin Kott’s Daring BMW R100 Cafe Racer

Posted on April 27, 2017 by Andrew in Café Racer, Classic. 28 comments

At a chaotic moment in history, it’s worth reflecting on the words of Bertrand Russell “The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.” Russell’s logic is born out in the back story to today’s incredible Cafe Racer. One look at the catalogue of builds by California’s Kott Motorcycles and you know they can spin a spanner. But brilliant builder Dustin Kott was apprehensive about taking on the project having never worked on a BMW before. He needn’t have had any doubt, as he’s turned a once bulky 1977 BMW R100/7 Tourer into a sleek and slick Cafe Racer.

GERMAN ARMY KNIFE. A Do It All BMW R100T from Boxer Metal

Posted on April 11, 2017 by Andrew in Café Racer, Classic. 9 comments

The more you ride and the more bikes you own, the more you realise that pretty much every bike is a compromise. If it goes fast, chances are it’ll be uncomfortable. If it’s great on the highway, it’ll suck on the twisties. And if it’s old, it’ll be totally unreliable. But the beauty of bike customising is that you don’t have to blindly take what you’re given. On the contrary, you can pretty much have it all. Which is just what the Boxer Metal client who now owns this ‘Weiss & Grun’ BMW 1982 R100T asked for. You name it, this cafe can pretty much do it.

‘BMW Motosport’ ‘79 R100RS Racer – JRM Motorcycle

Posted on March 30, 2017 by Andrew in Bobber, Racer, Tracker. 18 comments

BMW R-series customs. Go on, say it. You’ve seen more of them than Trump’s seen golf courses. You’ve seen more beefed-up boxers than a New York gym. You’ve seen more loud R’s than an overloaded pirate ship. We get it. But when we saw this little R100RS from France’s JRM Motorcycle, we were intrigued. Knobby tires? Nope. Bobber seat? Nope again. Murdered out? Extra nopes. Contrary to all expectations, this one has a road-racer-meets-motard vibe that we might just be digging. A lot.
