We were lucky enough to interview the talented guys from Untitled Motorcycles recently. They have been busy building bikes, hanging with Jay Leno and doing a small production run of their HyperScrambler. Adam Kay runs the UMC London workshop while across the Atlantic, Hugo Eccles runs the UMC San Francisco workshop.
Can you introduce yourself to our readers? What’s your background?
Adam Kay UMC-LON: I come from a fashion and art background. I worked in the design and production departments of a few high street stores helping to make sure that the original design intent was carried through to production. I left that world to study sculpture at the Royal College of Art- even exhibiting some of my work in a few galleries – before building motorcycles.
Hugo Eccles UMC-SF: I’m a career industrial designer of twenty years- almost as long as I’ve been riding bikes. I originally trained at the Royal College of Art and then spend the next decades working for the likes of IDEO, Fitch and Sir Terence Conran. A few years ago I moved to San Francisco and decided to combine my two passions- design and motorcycles- and build custom motorcycles full time.
Humans have been living with earthquakes since time immemorial. And seeing as though 21st Century technology is only just beginning to understand them, you can probably understand why pretty much every culture on earth has their own ancient explanation as to what causes them. According to ancient Japanese mythology, earthquakes were cause by a giant underground catfish named ‘Namazu’. And in Siberia, they believed quakes were caused by the giant mythical sled dogs that pulled the earth stopping to scratch. And while the Romans believed that their god Neptune caused earthquakes, their very cool name for them – ‘Terremoto’ or ‘Earth Mover’ – just happens to be the moto-esque name of today’s feature bike. It’s a killer Moto Guzzi from Miami’s Moto Studio, and if you’re into scramblers we’re pretty sure it will rock your world.
A good custom bike build is a big ask from just about anybody. The time, effort, thought and skills required are a challenge that has bettered the best of us. Starting custom shop is another step above that. Suddenly there are things like rent and customers to think about, let alone building cool bikes. Adding restorations into the mix means you’ll have to have an understanding of just how the bikes came out of the factory. Add cars to the mix and you’ve now got vast expanses of metal bodywork to consider. Seems like your climbing Everest already, yes? Well what if, just for good measure, we now make the shop both a clothing store and a brewery? Mission completely freakin’ impossible? Not for the keen proprietors of Italy’s Apache Custom Motorcycles. And as if to boast, here’s their out-of-the-box take on a Honda CB350F brat.

Passion. The Spanish are known for their passion; in life, in love and most importantly for us, in their custom motorcycle builds. The lines of a vintage MX bike, massaged into existence with a Mediterranean flavour make for one hell of a beautiful ride. This unique custom rolled out of the Spanish workshop Valtoron, named ‘La Loma 750’ it’s a reworked Kawasaki KZ750 stripped of the majority of it’s factory componentry. In its place you’ll find a stripped back dirt chewing machine, with go to match the show. And what a show it is.
Isn’t it weird how one little addition to an object can have seemingly untold benefits to it’s aesthetics. Take, for instance, your common, garden-variety Martini. Now you could argue that a Martini is simply a slug of gin (or vodka, if you’re having childish delusions about being a spy) and some vermouth. But I’d argue that what in fact makes the Martini is the garnish. Without that twist of lemon, olive, or whatever new-fangled hoopla they are currently adding to the glass, I’m betting that it would have disappeared without a trace into the ocean of nondescript cocktail wannabes a long time ago. The message you’ll need to take from this, my little pickled pipers? One single inspired touch can make a good bike great. And in the case of Farmer’s Racer, there’s no free drinks for guessing just what twist we are talking about.

For most motorcycle enthusiaists BikeEXIF is probably bookmarked on their work and home computer. But many don’t know much about the man behind the site. It was created by Chris Hunter, who until a few months ago lived only a few miles away from me in Sydney, Australia. Chris recently quit his full time job in advertising and moved his family to a farm in New Zealand to focus on BikeEXIF full time. The city of Auckland is commonly known as the ‘City of Sails’ because there are more yachts in the harbour per capita than any other city in the world. After our recent visit to the impressive Deus store and workshop, I think they should rename Auckland the ‘City of Classic Motorcycles’. We were blown away by the number of beautiful bikes housed in this huge warehouse, from vintage Vincents and Husqvarnas, right through to brand new Triumphs and Harley Custom Bobbers. Incredibly this huge warehouse is only footsteps from the heart of the city – and dangerously close to the Sky City Casino. To find out where they are, hit the jump.
The Wrench Monkees are auctioning off two of their amazing motorcycles on the auction site Lauritz. Gorilla Punch (pictured) is probably the most famous, being posted this year on more sites than Paris Hilton’s private parts. Although unlike Paris, this Honda CB750 Four is sexy, clean and has hardly been ridden. The Wrenchmonkees have done it again. Creating a truly unique HD XLCH Hardtail. We love the combination of the old Husqvarna CR tank, Pirelli trials knobby tires on a HD sportster with a Monkee hardtail rear frame. Add the WM megatron pipes and custom fender and you have one friggin cool looking bike. Their motorcycles are almost worth moving to Copenhagen for (also Carlsberg beer and lego).
